March on Gretna

I got this via the girlgangproductions and nolafeminist mailing list. Thought y'all would want to know about it too.

*MARCH ON GRETNA!*

During the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, people were told to evacuate
New Orleans by crossing the bridge that leads from New Orleans to
Gretna. The Crescent City Connection Bridge spans the Mississippi River
linking New Orleans to the west bank city of Gretna. However, if you
were black or in the company of blacks, you were blocked from evacuating
New Orleans by armed Gretna police with guard dogs. Under orders from
Gretna Police Chief Arthur S. Lawson to seal off the bridge and deny
safe passage to evacuees, Gretna police officers fired shots in the
direction of the crowds and held others at gunpoint.

On Monday, November 7, 2005, the progressive community will cross that
bridge!

*MARCH ON GRETNA!*

*Monday, November 7, 2005*

*Rally at 10:00 a.m. at the New Orleans Convention Center*

*March begins at 11:00 a.m.

*There will be a Press Conference for the March on Gretna on November 2,

We march with our fellow citizens displaced by Katrina to reclaim the
right to cross that bridge to Gretna, and in crossing that bridge in the
name of the rights to safety and self-determination, to racial and
economic justice, we will keep marching until we reclaim this democracy
in the elections on November 7, 2006! NEVER AGAIN WILL PROPERTY RIGHTS
TRUMP PEOPLE’S RIGHTS!

*WE WILL MARCH FOR FREEDOM IN NEW ORLEANS, USA!
WE WILL MARCH FOR CIVIL RIGHTS ON NOVEMBER 7, 2005!*

*AND WE WILL KEEP MARCHING, ADDING TO OUR NUMBERS,
UNTIL WE TAKE BACK AMERICA ON NOVEMBER 7, 2006! *

Barcelona

Dear Carlos,
If you want scene, please, come to Barcelona.
Love,
Jen.

This place is just... I don´t know. Really really beautiful and gorgeous and even the "dirty" streets are gorgeous with tons of really interesting graffiti but this place is so fucking dead. The most active thing that is going on right now is the church that was started back circa 1890. :P All the stores are the same and all the food is Middle Eastern or gelato. It´s just such a tourist wasteland and the people here are fucking horrible. I can´t stand the people of Barcelona, especially the men who just undress you with their eyes. I don´t mind the relationship that men have with women in New Orleans, but I´d much rather be told I´m beautiful and built like a black woman by some drunk guy in a street of New Orleans than asked if I wanted to have a drink with some random guy while I´m walking down the street, "¿Hables español?" "No." "Do you want to have a drink with me?" Uck, it was just disgusting and tacky and I can´t give it proper emphasis over a fucking blog. Men stand in the streets selling beers from six packs and if you don´t give them the time of day they just make you feel naked and ask you where you´re from, baby. If they´re not imagining you naked, they´re making you just feel unwanted--god, I realize I´m a tourist, but don´t you think I´m trying? I speak the language, say "please" and "thank you" to a point near excess and I don´t vomit on your streets for crying out loud! And god, hostels. We´re a bunch of rich spoiled kids pretending we can´t afford to live the life--poor fucking us! Hostel-goers are all nice, but pretty terribly boring, and I fit into this catagory as well, seeing that I´m participating in the myth. We travel Europe to find self because we´re too damn pampered to have to find ourselves through our own suffering. It´s just unbelievable--we´re so fucking middle-class it´s offensive. Let´s all booze it up in the hostel bar.

If I die...

If I die tomorrow, it's because I ate food this afternoon in Edinburgh that tasted like bleach. For serious. So, the lesson? Don't go to David Mann vegetarian restaurant on St. Mary's St. The end. I would like a jazz funeral followed by a viking funeral, and I like exotic flowers, thanks. :P
